Primarily found in Russia, amazonite also occurs in small amounts in Colorado, Virginia, Madagascar, and Brazil. Its chemical makeup is KAlSi3O8. It was once thought that the color came from copper, which is known to create blue and green colors in its ionic form; however, it is now suspected that Amazonite gets its color from small traces of lead and water that occur in the feldspar. It is between 6.0 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale.

Green stones were sometimes found in the Amazon River, and when amazonite was discovered many assumed that they were the same thing, and named the stone after the river. However, it’s currently unknown whether or not amazonite can be naturally found in that region.

Amazonite was prized by many ancient cultures, most notably tribes in northern Africa and the Egyptians. It was crafted into pendants, beads, and amulets, and several pieces were found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Metaphysical Properties

Amazonite is associated with prosperity and healing, as well as uniting personal dualities (masculine and feminine, physical and astral, etc.).

This stone is commonly used for healing from emotional trauma, finding peace, and relieving stress. It is also used to aid in clear communication, and many keep it close during public performances or speeches.

It is in tune with the heart and throat chakras, and is often worn as a pendant.
