Thinking about selling online? Try the following.

Recently I stuck my nose in a blog and left a rawther lengthy comment, which occurs to me might be a useful entry on its own.

Some folks make stuff and sell it, and some buy things to resell. This post is not so much for those who are interested in selling as an affiliate, whether it be books, music, software, insurance, or underpants. This is more for the small-business store owner who wants to branch out to online selling, or a Maker thinking about a webstore. A thrift-store guru or vintage collector wanting to make a few bucks online. For anyone who just wants to sell online, but doesn’t know where to start.

Here’s what I have learned and where I’m trying to go. I’m not all the way there yet, but I’m working on it.

Well, I know what shopping cart I’m NOT going to use

As I wrote yesterday, I’m searching for a shopping cart that I like. This is not easy, because I loathe shopping online, and I’m not all that fond of selling online either. I’d much rather sell to you in person. See what you pick up, touch, smell. Watch you experience and make your choices. Ask you what you’d like to see next time you come in. In short, I want to sell to YOU, not some faceless browser in Never Never Land. It’s very hard to do that on the internet.

But if I’m going to do the thing properly, I’d like to self-host it, rather than pay for a subscription store.

So, you’re wondering what I’m up to, maybe?

So it’s been about a month since INATS and you might be wondering, where are the product reviews?

Well, I’m working on that. In a way. Specifically, I’m working on trying to figure out what software to use on the home page that will not look too junky.

Setting up a webstore is no small task. I want self-hosted, preferably able to accept ProPay but if not I’ll take Amazon Payments and if I absolutely must I’ll go with Google Checkout. But really, I’d like to use ProPay, coz I get the money, like, right away. The others sit on your bucks for a while, with Amazon being the worst. But you do get paid in the end, so whatever, if people want to use Amazon, I’ll take it.

What I want is to be able to have all my products in one place, rather than click here to shop the “bookstore”. Click here to have these things drop-shipped to you from elsewhere. Or, click here to buy straight from ME, which will get you a lot of extra thank-you goodies in your package.

It’s damn frustrating. There are too many choices. All of them are ugly, but then, what DO I want my site to look like? That’s an even tougher question. None of the templates say “Metaphysical shop”, and none of them smell like a metaphysical shop. I have the same problem when shopping for cars. I don’t care for the way any of them look, all cars are ugly to me. It’s what’s under the hood that counts.

So until I figure out how I want to sell your products (and mine), I’m not doing reviews. But I am not just fooling around, either — I should be able to come up with a solution in the next couple weeks. Hang tight, authors, musicians, and publishers. Once I get the front end settled, I’ll go to town with your reviews.
